Subject : Onanole WWII Veteran
Message : I had an interesting letter from a WWII veteran here in Manitoba. His name is Fred Minty, and lives in Onanole. He was with the RCAF, flying with the 425 squadron based at Tholthorpe, England. On June 27, 1944 there was a horrific accident where a bomber landed on 3 engines, skidded on the tarmac and crashed into another bomber parked at dispersal, which in turn crashed into third. One bomber exploded and the recent arrival caught fire with all crew still onboard. All airmen were Canadians.
Fred Minty, after 65 years, still remembers the incident. His bomber was circling the airbase waiting to land when the bomber skidded and hit the parked plane. He saw the explosion and knew the members of the crew trapped in the burning plane. The belly gunner slept next to him in the barracks and while he survived the accident, he suffered horrible burns.
My name is Cynthia Faryon, and I\'m a Manitoba writer living in Richer. I have 8 published books with two more being released this month, one from James Lorimer and Company, and one from Formac Publishing. 5 of my books are stories of Canadians during WWII and 1 book is about Canadians in the First Great War.
Mr. Minty wrote me this letter after reading one of my books \"Incredible Tales of the RCAF\". In that book was the story of the accident at Tholthorpe. He had the book at one time, but lent it out and never got it back. He wanted to know where he could buy another copy. This is what he wrote to me:
\"There was one little error in the story. The plane involved wasn\'t the last one to land. There was one more still in the sky, our crew. We had a 2,000 pound delayed action bomb hung up. We were ordered out over the North Sea to try and get rid of it. We just got back to the station, flying at about 1,000 feet and directly over the crash site when the first bomber exploded. We were then diverted to the Middleton St. George station. This accident damaged a few parked planes. The belly gunner, who had the bed next to me, had bad face burns.... I enjoyed your stories and I believe they should be told.\"
He requested information on where he could buy the book. I am planning on driving to Onanole to present him with a signed copy of the book. As Remembrance Day is approaching, I wondered if anyone from the town would be interested in attending this meeting, or might like the presentation to be part of the Remembrance Day program. I think it would be a great interest piece for November 11th.
My phone number is 204-422-6970 or toll free at 1-866-757-6204. I can also be reached through this email address (cats1032@hotmail.com) if you would like to talk to me. |
